Stronger together
We aim to be a driving force for collaboration and community.
«Stronger Together» is inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and highlights the importance of strong collaboration between public authorities, businesses, and civil society. It is a key focus area in Color Line’s sustainability strategy and supports the company’s broader goals and ambitions.
Our Key Initiatives
Through its diverse operations, Color Line has many points of contact with a wide range of stakeholder groups—from customers, tourism partners, and suppliers to public authorities, organisations, and the media. Due to its size and importance, Color Line has significant influence and capacity to act, including within sustainability. This creates an expectation that the company uses its opportunities to be a driving force in the sustainability field.
Active in Leading Networks
Color Line recognises the importance of being an active participant in various pilot programmes aimed at identifying and analysing climate-neutral propulsion and fuel alternatives. Insights from such programmes provide the company with increased knowledge of opportunities in the short, medium, and long term.
We are a partner in the Green Shipping Programme, the Green Land Transport Programme, as well as relevant committees within the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association and the international industry organisation InterFerry. We are also a partner in “Business for Climate” with the City of Oslo and have a strategic collaboration with the environmental foundation Bellona.
New Knowledge Through Research
For 25 years, Color Line has collaborated on research with the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) through the FerryBox installation on M/S Color Fantasy. This equipment collects daily data on water quality along the entire Oslo–Kiel route and is used in several research programmes related to ocean acidification, monitoring, and marine environments.
In 2025, the programme was expanded with an installation on M/S Color Hybrid, which will collect data along the Sandefjord–Strömstad route. This route provides an important contribution to research, as it covers both the Outer Hvaler and Kosterhavet National Parks.
Color Line has also initiated and leads a customer-oriented research project in collaboration with the University of South-Eastern Norway, Kristiania University College, and the German Institute for Tourism Research. The project analyses how the transition to more climate-friendly energy solutions affects demand and willingness to pay (across different segments) in the international ferry travel market. The project received NOK 3 million in funding from the Research Council of Norway (2022–2024). Through increased customer insight and understanding, we see opportunities to take a leading position in customer-oriented sustainability and climate perspectives.
Joint Efforts for Shared Benefits
In addition to being an important partner in the Norwegian maritime cluster, we work actively and purposefully together with a wide range of stakeholders across our diverse operations—from hotels and restaurants to tourism, experiences, and freight transport. This includes civil society and various public authorities at local, regional, and national levels, where we aim to contribute to holistic, shared solutions.
