Great experiences, small footprints
We aim to be a catalyst for more sustainable tourism.
Our ambition within tourism is to offer great and memorable travel experiences for a broad range of travellers, while ensuring that our products leave a small climate and environmental footprint. We seek to contribute to the sustainable development of the tourism industry at and around our destinations in Norway and abroad.
-
Goals by 2030
- At least 80% of all our suppliers and partners within the travel and tourism sector shall be sustainability-certified
- At least 50% of our available travel packages shall be classified as “Sustainable end-to-end journeys”
- All our passenger vessels shall offer monthly activities with a targeted focus on inclusion and safe environments for social interaction
Our key initiatives
Color Line is a key player in tourism and transport in the region connecting Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Through passenger transport and travel packages, we generate significant value for local communities, businesses and tourism. At the same time, we work to strengthen sustainability throughout the value chain—environmentally, socially and economically.
Sustainable end-to-end travel
Color Line develops and offers travel packages together with our partners that cover the entire journey—from door to door. Our goal is to make it easy for customers to choose sustainable travel options throughout the journey, without having to navigate complex choices along the way.
To achieve this, we map the share of sustainability-certified suppliers and tourism partners in our core markets. This provides a clearer picture of our current position and enables us to set clear requirements. We aim to label our products with information on sustainability certifications, making it easy for customers to identify responsible choices. Suppliers that do not meet our sustainability requirements will gradually be phased out of our portfolio.
A social meeting place
Color Line is more than a transport company—we are also a social meeting place. Our vessels are arenas for recreation, community and experiences for people of all ages. We actively use customer insights to continuously improve and adapt our offerings to deliver the greatest possible value for as many people as possible—whether families with children, senior travellers, cruise guests or business travellers.
For example, sound levels at shows are adjusted based on passenger profiles, and during school holidays our vessels are transformed into family-friendly environments with dedicated activities and menus.
Another important initiative is Skravlekoppen (the Conversation Cup), a low-threshold initiative designed to encourage social interaction. Introduced in 2021, it offers travellers a simple way to connect with others if they wish. Feedback has been very positive, and the initiative is gradually being rolled out in more of our onboard cafés.
Value creation and economic impact
Color Line is a key driver of tourism and local business development in the four countries in which we operate—Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. Through daily, year-round operations and close cooperation with destinations, hotels and experience providers, we contribute to economic growth and job creation in the regions we serve.
Our travellers contribute significantly to local economies. Each year, approximately 600,000 international tourists travel to Norway with Color Line. On average, these visitors stay for more than 10 days, representing around 6.5 million guest nights and annual tourism spending of approximately NOK 10 billion. This generates substantial economic ripple effects for accommodation, dining, retail and experience providers—both in urban areas and rural communities.
